With SpaceX filing for what could end up being the biggest IPO in history earlier this month, I wanted to take a detour and figure out who actually owns the thing already. The company is still private — shares don't trade on any exchange yet — but a long list of mutual funds, closed-end funds, and even a couple of ETFs have been quietly accumulating SpaceX stock through private rounds for years.
Pulling the data from all the fund families, 61 fund vehicles now report SpaceX exposure totaling roughly $30.2 billion. In this post, I decided to list the top 20ish funds.
Headline Takeaways
- Fidelity Contrafund (FCNTX) is by far the largest SpaceX holder at $8.05B across multiple share classes — making SpaceX a ~5.1% position in one of the country's largest actively-managed mutual funds.
- Baron Partners Fund (BPTRX) is the highest-conviction bet on the list: 33% of the entire fund's AUM is in SpaceX. Three other Baron funds are over 20% AUM weight.
- Fidelity dominates the holder list — 32 of the 61 funds, accounting for $21.55B (71%) of all disclosed SpaceX exposure.
- Only three exchange-listed vehicles offer meaningful SpaceX exposure today — Destiny Tech100 Inc. (NYSE: DXYZ) at 14.25% of NAV, the Baron First Principles ETF at 10.78% of AUM, and BlackRock Capital Allocation Term Trust (NYSE: BCAT) at 1.27% of AUM. Any retail investor can buy them through a standard brokerage account.
Other Ways to Get SpaceX Exposure
Beyond the three exchange-listed vehicles above, the interval funds below also hold SpaceX in size — but expect lockup-style liquidity (quarterly tenders, not daily redemptions), higher fees, and in some cases accredited-investor requirements:
- Private Shares Fund — $189.8M position, 16.3% of AUM
- StepStone Private Venture & Growth Fund — $586.5M position, 8.5% of AUM
- ARK Venture Fund (ARKVX) — $60.6M position, 10.3% of AUM
- Coatue Innovative Strategies Fund — $137.0M position, 2.8% of AUM
Top 15 Funds by SpaceX Position Size
The biggest SpaceX positions in dollar terms sit inside large Fidelity and Baron mutual funds. These aren't pure-play SpaceX bets, but for most investors they're the realistic way to get exposure. I've also tacked the three exchange-listed funds onto the bottom of the table — they don't crack the top 15 by dollar size, but they're the only options a retail investor can buy on an exchange today.

Notes & Methodology
- Many funds hold SpaceX across multiple share classes (Series G, Series H, Series J, Series N, and common stock). The positions above are aggregated across all share classes held by each fund.
- "% of AUM" is the position's reported fair value divided by the fund's total reported AUM for the same period.
- Mutual fund tickers shown are typically the primary investor share class.
- SpaceX remains a private company. Any indirect exposure through these vehicles carries the usual fund risks (mandate drift, fees, redemption gates for interval funds) plus the private-markets-specific risk that SpaceX's mark is only revised periodically.
